Learning Through Research Internship 2022: Big-Data From High-Throughput Experimentation

The group will again offer an 8-week paid summer internship to work on developing a cloud-based solution for high-throughput data management. This position is only available to current University of Manchester students in their penultimate year of study. The role will sit alongside PhD and postdoctoral staff in the group,

New MPhys students - Peter, Kit and Jack

The group welcomes three new MPhys students for semester 2. They will be working on: * Peter Parsons – Single-photon compressive spectro-imaging methodology (assisted by Dr. Stefan Skalsky) * Kit Garbutt & Jack Young – Enhancing optical imaging for crop-science (led by Prof. Bruce Grieve)

New Funding : Small Capital Equipment

The group has secured funding for a 3-year license of NextNano for quantum device simulation. This is part of the University of Manchester’s COVID research-recovery fund, and will be led by group member Nikesh.

Hardware drivers made available

A set of MATLAB-based hardware drivers developed in the lab have been made available online. More details are available on the Hardware Drivers page, or via github. These span Thor Labs imaging equipment, oceanoptics spectrometers, and a range of motion controllers.

New Funding : Single-photon spectroscopy at the nanoscale

Patrick and colleague Jessica Boland have received short-term pump-prime funding to combine single-photon spectroscopy with scattering-type near-field microscopy. The project, running from February to June will employ one postdoc for a proof-of-principle system.

Invited seminar for UKNC: Advances in zincblende III-Nitrides for next generation visible LEDs

Stephen was invited to present a virtual seminar for the UK Nitride Consortium, discussing recent developments in zincblende-phase gallium nitride based light emitting devices. Working in collaboration with the group of Dr. David Binks at the University of Manchester, and the Cambridge Centre for Gallium Nitride, Stephen demonstrated the capability

PhD examiner for Zizhuo Liu

Patrick was external examiner for Zizhuo Liu, a PhD candidate in Prof. Huiyun Liu‘s group at University College London. Zizhuo defended his thesis entitled “High-performance III-V Quantum structures and devices grown on Si substrates”.

PhD examiner for Vasilis Georgiadis

Patrick was the internal examiner for Vasilis Georgiadis, a member of Dr Darren Graham‘s research group in Manchester. Vasilis defended his thesis entitled “Terahertz-driven manipulation of electron bunches using dielectric-lined waveguides“.
